Canadian Military History

I have been following the footsteps of Percy’s journey to Europe. Over the last several months, I have been researching the journey of my Great Grandfather Percy with his War Journal as my guidepost. I have been piecing together information about the places he fought and the things he saw. In September of 1915, he joined the 7th Battalion of the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division. This is where his journey begins. While researching the role that my Great Grandfather played in the war, I have come across a lot of fascinating history about the role Canadians played during the First World War.

During the First World War, there were over 600,000 Canadians that served in Europe. Many more made big sacrifices at home to support the war efforts overseas. Over 60,000 Canadians died during the First World War.

“Not for love of battle, not for lust of conquest, not for greed of possessions, but for the cause of honour, to maintain solemn pledges, to uphold principles of liberty, to withstand forces that would convert the world into an armed camp; yea, in the very name of the peace that we sought at any cost save that of dishonour, we have entered into this war; and, while gravely conscious of the tremendous issues involved and of all the sacrifices that they may entail, we do not shrink from them, but with firm hearts we abide the event.”

– Prime Minster Robert Borden. August 19, 1914
